East Tamaki Porotherm Project
The project includes a major and minor dwelling on Point View Drive, East Tamaki. The builders loved working with the Porotherm blocks, and they made for a clean and tidy site. Joinery to be installed. Our client was drawn to the sustainability and durability of the blocks and knew they were vital in achieving their near-zero energy goal.
“We have been living in here for 1 and a half years now including almost 2 full winters. We totally love living in our Porotherm house. As well as knowing that the house is healthy its also warm all year round. We love the natural materials that wont rot or emit toxic chemicals, and know it is a great healthy environment for our Children.
The temperatures are amazingly stable. As I am writing this its the end of July at 930 at night and Im sitting here in shorts and a T shirt, its 22.6 °C with no heating on. The coldest it is got down to 19°C in the morning on a couple of occasions. Our house is northerly aspect so we are able make use of the sun to heat up the house in winter. The thermal mass of the house coupled with insulating qualities of the blocks (and the ceiling/floor insulation) means that the house stays really warm all winter, We have used the fireplace only 2 times this winter and thats the only form of heating (apart form the sun), once was when we had had rain for a few days and needed to dry some washing …..
We have lived in a brand new hosue previous to this ( not made of porotherm) and needed Air conditioning in summer to cool and winter to heat. There is no need for that in this house.
In summer the house very stable in summer as well. It has got up to 26 in summer a couple of times, so we have installed a ceiling fan which is more than enough to keep us cool.
If we ever built again, we would build with Porotherm. Thanks Chris and Robyn for everything you guys have done for us.”
