2226 - Lustenau, Austria

"Atmosphere versus machine" - the motto behind the "2226" building in Austria. The fabric first approach at its finest. This office building stays at a comfortable 22-26 degrees all year round without the need for heating or cooling. Made with two layers of Porotherm 38 (making the wall 76 cm thick!) and breathable lime plaster.

"The sole sources of heat are present in the building anyway: its users (on average a person emits about 80 watts in thermal energy), and the PCs, photocopying machines and coffee machines in the office rooms. In the final analysis, showing that this can indeed work without technical equipment is a challenge – a challenge to the fraternity of building services engineers and all those others who in the view of many architects have made building much too complicated in recent years with excessive technology."
